The 4-kilometer-long and 12-meter-high 16th and 17th century wall, with 10 arrow-shaped bastions, is now planted with shady pine trees that form a popular promenade from which you can alternately look down over the medieval city and out over the surrounding fertile countryside.
Behind the curtain wall, Lucca is a great Renaissance jewel with no modern junk buildings ? but first enjoy the 5-kilometer walking tour of the city to get a real sense of what it's like.
